A Litter Of Bones by J D Kirk – Book Review

‘A breath of fresh air in the crime fiction genre.’ – L.J. Ross

‘Gripping. Atmospheric. Chilling. A superb debut.’ – Adam Croft

Was the biggest case of his career the worst mistake he ever made?

Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed ‘Mister Whisper,’ earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process.

Now, he spends his days working in Glasgow’s Major Investigations Team, and his nights reliving the horrors of what he saw.

And what he did.

When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home.

But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

And, if so, is the real Mister Whisper about to claim his fourth victim?

A Litter of Bones is the explosive debut crime thriller novel from JD Kirk, an exciting new voice in Scottish crime fiction. Perfect for fans of L.J. Ross, Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre, and Stuart Macbride.

‘A phenomenal novel.’ – M.A. Comley

This is #1 in the DCI Jack Logan series set in the Scottish Highlands.

A young boy, Connor has gone missing…..his parents receive a note and a teddy bear…..due to similarities to a case from 10 years ago, DCI Logan is sent to investigate.

He is to work with a small local team and together they hope to find the missing boy.

Logan is still obsessed with the Whisper Man Case, The child murderer is locked up in prison, but won’t speak about his last victim…..Logan visits and asks regularly, but Petrie was injured in a fall at his arrest, and has suffered a degree of brain damage..

Who has taken Connor? Is this a copycat?

This is a thriller that grabs you with both hands… is one of the most gripping police/crime thrillers I’ve read and a cliche I know, but I really couldn’t put it down and raced through it in one sitting….

There’s so much happening…..a great team of detectives, with their banter, determination, tea and a tunnocks wafer….. There’s some really dark moments too the chapters from a captive boys perspective are heartbreaking and have a palpable tension. A clever, dark and twisty thriller and I loved it.

Lost Solace by Karl Drinkwater – Book Review

Sometimes spaceships disappear with everyone on board – the Lost Ships. But sometimes they come back, strangely altered, derelict, and rumoured to be full of horrors.

Opal is on a mission. She’s been seeking something her whole life. Something she is willing to die for. And she thinks it might be on a Lost Ship.

Opal has stolen Clarissa, an experimental AI-controlled spaceship, from the military. Together they have tracked down a Lost Ship, in a lonely nebula far from colonised space.

The Lost Ship is falling into the gravity well of a neutron star, and will soon be truly lost … forever. Legends say the ships harbour death, but there’s no time for indecision.

Opal gears up to board it. She’s just one woman, entering an alien and lethal environment. But perhaps with the aid of Clarissa’s intelligence – and an armoured spacesuit – Opal may stand a chance.

Opal is searching for a Lost Ship…it’s been missing for 14 years and her sister was on it when it disappeared. Sometimes they come back! They have tech that could be worth a lot of money……but there are things worth so much more…

Opal is alone on a small ship with the AI, Clarissa…..stolen from the military and hacked to ensure it obeys her commands…..

They find a ship, could it be the one?

With Clarissa’s help, Opal gets on board, but she’s not alone….what are the pink blobs? And those fairy lights are mesmerising!

With something unknown chasing her, she relies on Clarissa for navigation, but then things get worse as the military arrive……!

‘Shoulda brought a bigger gun’

This is a totally immersive and fast paced read that is full on, non stop action.  With a tense atmosphere broken only by the humour and ‘friendship’ between Opal and Clarissa.  The chill of the darkness and those creepy synth dolls made me shudder! ….I loved the strong female character, intelligent and fearless (very Ripley-esq) and likeable too. I can’t wait to read the next in the series…
