Her Last Whisper by Jennifer Chase – Book Review

Katie focuses her mind, trying to keep another anxiety attack at bay. The victim’s long brown hair is slick and wet, her body rigid in the grass. She looks more like a mannequin than the woman Katie had spoken with only yesterday, the woman she had promised to protect…

When a cold, naked body is discovered by a couple on a jog through the lush woodlands of Pine Valley, California, new recruit Detective Katie Scott is stunned to discover the victim is Amanda Payton – a much-loved local nurse and the woman at the heart of an unsolved case she’s been investigating whilst getting a grip on her crippling PTSD.

Weeks earlier, Amanda had run, battered and bruised, out into the headlights of a passing patrol car. She claimed to have just escaped a kidnapping, but with no strong evidence, the case went cold. The Pine Valley police made a fatal mistake…

Katie is certain the marks on Amanda’s wrists complete a pattern of women being taken, held captive and then showing up dead in remote locations around Pine Valley – and she won’t let someone die on her watch again.

But then a beautiful office worker with a link to the hospital where Amanda worked goes missing. With only days before the next body is due to show up, can Katie make amends for her past by saving this innocent life?

Totally gripping crime fiction for fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh. Nothing will prepare you for this nail-biting roller-coaster ride…

This is the second in the Detective Katie Scott series, while it can easily be read as a stand-alone you are missing out on a great series.

Katie is starting her first day of her new job, leading the cold case unit. She starts reviewing cases and one catches her eye….a kidnapping and assault case. Amanda had been taken, kept for about a week but escaped…but no one was ever arrested. All Amanda had said when she was found was ‘I told the truth’…

So, Katie begins her investigation, speaks to Amanda, who is then murdered….and there have been others! Can she find the kidnapper in time, will she allow her relationship to actually get going? With her life in turmoil, her PTSD is always in the background but she is determined to find the truth and obviously Cisco, her dog, is there to help too.

This is a totally gripping, dark, scary police procedural with great characters and a well defined, twisty plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait for Book 3….

Hallowed Ground by Paul Twivy – Book Review

Hallowed Ground: The Mystery of the African Fairy Circles

This magical story is inspired by the most haunting and least explored country in the world – Namibia – with its foggy Skeleton Coast, buried goldmines, shocking secrets and awe-inspiring sand dunes.

Spread across the face of its deserts are hundreds of miles of ‘fairy circles’ : vast enough to be seen from space. They grow and die with the same lifespan as humans, yet no-one has been able to explain why or how they appear.

Then one day, three teenagers and their families arrive from different parts of the globe. Helped by bushmen, the buried possessions of a Victorian explorer, and a golden leopard, they solve the mystery of the African Circles. What will be discovered beneath the hallowed ground? And how will it change the future of the planet above it?

This is a YA novel, set in Namibia.

The tale centres around the Namibian myth of the fairy circles. A clever mix of old myth and present day life and issues. It tells some of the history of Namibia, it’s culture, landscape and doesn’t shy from the brutal side either.

The protagonists are teenagers who want to solve the mystery of the fairy circles and with the help of a local bushman and some Victorian art ifs ts they mystery begins. Can they solve the mystery? What will the consequences be for the world if they do?

An interesting, well paced read about young people and their desire to save this planet. Thought provoking.

The Art Of Sherlock Holmes – USA Edition by Phil Growick – Book Review

The Art of Sherlock Holmes-USA Edition 1 is truly unique. While there have been literally hundreds of Holmes pastiches written before our first volume, The Art of Sherlock Holmes-West Palm Beach, there had never been a volume where Holmes short stories were interpreted by such accomplished artists.

In this first USA edition, thirteen world-class artists who live and create in the United States have each had a story assigned to them – specifically dependent on the particular talent of each artist. Whether the interpretations be from the forms of surrealist, contemporary, realist, digital, minimalist, symbolism, or an amalgam of various forms, each piece of art created is unique, hypnotic, mesmerizing and unforgettable.  Each created specifically to express the essence of each incredible Holmes story.

The thirteen stories herein range from the impossibly baffling (except for Holmes) to the humorous, paranormal, or simply intellectually intricate. You’re presented with murder, theft, treason, betrayal, love, loss and greed. All the ingredients to make delicious Holmes meals of mystery. But please remember, art is in the eye of the beholder. So we hope you’ll appreciate each creation for what it is: an inimitable interpretation of a truly unique Holmes story.

For those of you who get lost in abstract art, our abstract artists have provided an explanation of what their art means in relation to the story they’ve interpreted.

The Art of Sherlock Holmes books are curated by Phil Growick, himself a renowned Holmes author.

What a stunning book…..

I’ve always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes and I love these new stories of Sherlock and Dr Watson.

Each of the stories are written in the style of Conan Doyle with a fresh feel but still have the heart and soul of Sherlock and are accompanied by truly wonderful artwork.

At the beginning of each story is an introduction to the author and to the artist, whose art illustrates the tales in such a unique style.

This Is a real coffee table book, one to have on display to enjoy the art and the stories together……a must for any fan of Sherlock Holmes and his adventures.
